NTSB Finds Rudder Problem in Airbus 300
Posted on Monday, 31 May 2024 @ 05:12:27 CDT by ComPilots

Anonymous writes "
An investigation into the November 2001 crash of an Airbus A-300-600 in New York has found an unrelated potentially lethal design flaw.

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) does not believe that problems with the rudder control system caused the crash of American Airlines Flight 287. The plane came down shortly after taking off from Kennedy International Airport en route to the Dominican Republic, killing all 260 people on the plane and five on the ground.

During its investigation, the NTSB examined an earlier incident involving an American Airlines Airbus-300 that lost 3,000 feet in height. The agency determined that the rudder system, designed to limit movement of the rudder as the plane goes faster, does not react quickly enough to sudden acceleration. The rudders need to move through a wide range at slow speeds that could be deadly when the plane is going faster.

A spokeswoman for Airbus said the company is already planning to redesign the system though Airbus blames the Flight 287 crash on the pilot saying it was a pilot error.
