Boeing 747-100 rebuilt as teaching tool

Anonymous writes " A 93-foot section of TWA Flight 800, which blew up in 1996, has been reassembled and now serves as a teaching tool for air crash investigators. The National Transportation Safety Board rebuilt a section of the 225-foot Boeing 747-100 in a hangar in Calverton, New York, as part of its investigation into the accident.
Through peeled-off sections of the aircraft's skin can be seen rows of seats, many intact, that conjure images of the 230 people who perished minutes after takeoff from Kennedy Airport on a July 17, 1996, flight to Paris.
The NTSB found that Flight 800 was destroyed by a center fuel tank explosion, probably caused by a spark from a short circuit in the wiring that ignited vapors in the tank.
The FAA, following NTSB recommendations, has since ordered airlines to make 60 changes to eliminate possible ignition sources. The FAA researched ways to reduce the chance of fuel tank explosions and said in February that it will order airlines to install a system for that purpose.
Safety board officials hope the reconstruction of Flight 800 will help teach aircraft accident investigators how to examine wreckage for clues to a crash's cause. By just looking at the pieces of the shattered plane, investigators can tell how the plane came apart. Curled metal along the top of the structure show how pieces peeled off sequentially. Soot marks show how a fire spread. The direction in which spars twisted indicates how the explosion happened. "
